Winchmore Hill
Air source heat pump with roof-mounted solar

Mitsubishi Ecodan air source heat pump
An Ecodan stood off the boundary fence far enough that the fan discharge is not bouncing straight back off it, which is what makes a badly sited unit sound louder than it is.

Air conditioning installation in north London costs 2,400 to 3,200 pounds for one room fitted including VAT, and 4,300 to 5,800 pounds for two rooms on one outdoor unit. There is no travel charge anywhere in north London: we are based in N14.
North London is the easiest part of the city to install in, and the reason is the housing stock rather than the paperwork.

Why north London is the easiest part of the city to install in
Most of the housing between the North Circular and the M25 is interwar semi-detached and detached, built between about 1920 and 1939, and it has the one thing an air conditioning installation actually wants: a side return. A side return gives you a ground level position for the outdoor unit that is out of sight from the street, away from the neighbour's window, on solid ground that needs no bracket, and reachable with a ladder in ten years time when it needs a service.
That single feature removes most of what makes an installation expensive. No wall brackets, no scaffold, no roof frame, no long pipe run around the front of the building, and no argument with a freeholder. It is why a straightforward bedroom job in Southgate or Winchmore Hill lands at the bottom of the price range and the same job in a Kensington mansion block lands near the top.
Where it stops being easy
Two places. The first is the Victorian and Edwardian terracing closer in, through Islington, Camden, Stoke Newington and parts of Haringey, where there is no side return, the rear elevation is often three storeys, and the outdoor unit has to go on a bracket or in a light well. That is a real job rather than a hard one, but it adds 250 to 600 pounds for the bracket and anti-vibration mounts, and sometimes a tower.
The second is conservation areas, which are dense in Camden and Islington and patchy further out. Inside one you keep permitted development rights on a house, but the unit cannot go on a wall or roof slope fronting a highway. In practice that means the rear, which in a terrace with no side access is exactly where the bracket problem lives. We check the boundary for your specific address before quoting.
What we can actually promise on timing here
A survey within 48 hours for anywhere in the boroughs listed below, and usually the next working day for Enfield, Barnet and Haringey. A fault call we will answer with the day we can genuinely attend rather than a day that sounds good on the phone.
The reason those numbers are different from the ones a London-wide company can offer is not effort, it is geography. From N14 the top of the borough list is fifteen minutes and the bottom of it is thirty. Nobody is crossing the river twice in a day.

Air conditioning in North London: common questions
Which north London postcodes do you cover?
Every N postcode, every EN postcode, NW1 through NW11, and the E postcodes at the top of the list through Walthamstow and Leyton. The boroughs with their own pages are Enfield, Barnet, Haringey, Islington, Camden and Waltham Forest.
If your postcode is not on that list it does not mean no. What decides a job is drive time from N14, not a boundary on a map, so it is worth asking.
Is air conditioning cheaper in north London than central London?
Slightly, and not for the reason people expect. The units and the labour cost the same. What differs is access: no congestion charge, parking outside the property rather than a permit and a walk, ground level outdoor positions instead of brackets and hoists, and far fewer freeholders to satisfy.
On a like-for-like single room job the difference is usually 150 to 400 pounds. On a flat in a managed block it can be considerably more, and that is a consent problem rather than a location one.
Do you install in north London flats?
Yes, and a good share of the work is flats, particularly the interwar and 1960s blocks through Finchley, Wood Green and Walthamstow. It takes two permissions rather than one: written freeholder consent and planning permission, because flats sit outside permitted development for this work.
We prepare the licence pack the managing agent asks for at no charge. The order the two permissions are done in is what decides whether it is expensive, and there is a full sequence on the leasehold flats page.
How quickly can you get to a breakdown in north London?
In the boroughs closest to us, usually the same or next working day in season. Further out it depends on what is already booked, and we will tell you the honest date.
A diagnosis is 89 pounds plus VAT and it is waived if we carry out the repair. See the repairs page for what we can usually fix on the first visit.
