A job we did in Enfield
A gas boiler replaced by a heat pump in Enfield EN3
The owner of this EN3 house wanted to come off gas. We fitted a 7 kW Vaillant aroTHERM plus air source heat pump outside and a Vaillant hot water cylinder in the cupboard, and the whole installation took three days.
We applied for the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for the owner, and it was approved within 48 hours.
It is heating rather than air conditioning, but it is the same engineers, the same free survey and the same fixed written price, fifteen minutes from our base in N14. More on air source heat pumps, and on air conditioning in Enfield Highway EN3.
Air conditioning installation in Enfield costs 2,400 to 3,200 pounds for a single room, fitted and including VAT, and takes one day on site.
The 1930s semis around Oakwood and Southgate were built with generous plot widths, which is why an outdoor unit rarely causes a boundary problem here and often does in an inner borough.

The housing stock in Enfield, and what it means for the job
Enfield is the easiest borough in north London to install in, and the reason is the housing stock. Large parts of it are 1930s semi-detached with a side return and a decent garden, which is close to an ideal outdoor unit position: out of sight from the street, more than a metre from the boundary, and a short pipe run to the bedrooms above. Winchmore Hill and Grange Park add Edwardian and interwar detached houses with even more room. The harder parts are the Victorian terraces around Palmers Green and the flats above the shops on Green Lanes, where the only realistic position is the rear elevation and the pipe route has to be worked out properly.
The typical Enfield installation
The most common Enfield job is a single 3.5kW unit in a first-floor double bedroom of a 1930s semi, with the outdoor unit at ground level in the side return. One day on site, and it stays comfortably inside permitted development.
How far we are from Enfield, and what we have finished nearby
Our own address is N14 5RH, which is 2.4 miles from the middle of Enfield in a straight line. A drive is longer than that and depends on the hour, so we are a few minutes away in N14, right on the Enfield boundary, so most of the borough is a ten to twenty minute drive.
The three jobs of ours closest to Enfield, with the distance from the borough rather than from us, because that is the number that says whether we know the area:
- Winchmore Hill N21, heat pump and solar: 1.6 miles from Enfield. Air source heat pump with roof-mounted solar.
- Winchmore Hill N21, heat pump: 1.6 miles from Enfield. Mitsubishi Ecodan air source heat pump.
- Enfield EN3, heat pump: 1.8 miles from Enfield. Samsung monobloc air source heat pump.

Permission in Enfield
Conservation area coverage in Enfield is comparatively low, which is one of the reasons installations here tend to be straightforward. On a house, an installation meeting the Class G conditions is permitted development and needs no application. We still check the address, because one listed building or one Article 4 street is enough to change the answer.
What the housing in Enfield means for permission
61 per cent of homes in Enfield are houses, which is high for London and is the main reason installations here tend to be straightforward. 7 per cent are detached and 25 per cent semi-detached, and a semi with a side return is close to the ideal outdoor unit position. Only 39 per cent are flats, and those are the ones that need planning permission and freeholder consent. The most common home in Enfield is a flat in a purpose-built block, 30 per cent, which usually means a managing agent, a licence for alterations and a plant position the building decides. By share of houses it is in the upper half of the 21 boroughs we cover north of the Thames.
| Home type | Share of Enfield | What it means here |
|---|---|---|
| Detached | 7% | The easiest, with a choice of elevations |
| Semi-detached | 25% | Usually a side return, the best position there is |
| Terraced | 29% | No side access, so the rear or a bracket |
| Purpose-built flat | 30% | A large share here. Planning permission and freeholder consent, both |
| Converted flat | 7% | Two permissions, usually a smaller freeholder |
Shares of the 120,923 households counted in Enfield at the 2021 Census, table TS044, rounded. Percentages do not total 100 because homes in commercial buildings and temporary structures are counted separately.
Everything we fit in Enfield

Air conditioning in Enfield: common questions
How much does air conditioning cost in Enfield?
2,400 to 3,200 pounds for a single room, and Enfield sits at the lower half of that range because access is usually straightforward and parking is not a problem. A two-room system on one outdoor unit is typically 4,300 to 5,800 pounds, and three rooms 6,400 to 8,600 pounds.
Every price includes the units, installation, commissioning, electrical work and VAT. The fixed price comes after a free survey. There is a full breakdown on the cost page.
Do I need planning permission for air conditioning in Enfield?
Most likely not. 61 per cent of homes in Enfield are houses, and a house installation meeting the Class G conditions is permitted development.
The section further down this page sets out what the housing stock here means in practice, and every condition is on the planning permission page. We check the conservation area boundary, any Article 4 direction and the listed building register for your exact address before quoting.
How quickly can you get to Enfield?
We are a few minutes away in N14, right on the Enfield boundary, so most of the borough is a ten to twenty minute drive. For a survey we usually offer something within 48 hours, and for a fault call we will tell you the day we can genuinely attend rather than promising one we cannot keep.
Do you install in flats in Enfield?
Yes. 39 per cent of homes in Enfield are flats, 30 per cent of them purpose-built and 7 per cent conversions, so it is a large share of what we do here. It takes two permissions rather than one: the freeholder's written consent and planning permission from the council.
We prepare the licence pack the managing agent will ask for at no charge, including the drawing, the sound data and the insurance. The order the two permissions are done in is what decides whether it is expensive, and there is a full sequence on the leasehold flats page.
