Midea air conditioning costs 2,400 to 3,200 pounds for one room in London, supplied and fitted including VAT. The unit itself is cheaper than a Daikin or a Mitsubishi, but the unit is the smaller half of an installed price, so the saving is real and modest.
What you give up is a little refinement at the very bottom of the fan range and some depth of spare parts network in year ten. What you keep is the installation, which matters more.

The honest case for buying the cheaper unit
On an installed price of 2,400 to 3,200 pounds for one room, the indoor and outdoor units are a minority of the total. The rest is the core drilling, the pipe run, the electrical work, the commissioning and the labour, and none of that gets cheaper because the badge does.
So the saving on choosing Midea over Daikin for the same output is real but smaller than the brochure prices suggest. What that means in practice is that the sensible way to use it is not to save a few hundred pounds on one room, it is to do three rooms instead of two.
The other genuinely good use is a room that does not justify a flagship: a spare bedroom, a home office used three days a week, a conservatory that is empty for half the year.
What you actually give up
A little quiet at the very bottom of the range. The best Daikin and Mitsubishi wall units reach 19 dB(A) on their lowest fan speed; Midea's sit above that. In a living room nobody notices. In a bedroom belonging to a light sleeper, they might.
Depth of the UK spare parts network in year ten. Daikin and Mitsubishi have more of it. This is the argument that actually holds, and it is worth weighing on a machine you expect to keep for fifteen years.
What you do not give up is reliability in the first several years, in our experience, and you do not give up the thing that most decides how long a system lasts, which is whether it was commissioned properly. A weighed refrigerant charge, a real pressure test and a proper vacuum matter more than the badge.
Why you may already own one
Midea manufactures air conditioning under contract for a number of names sold in the UK, so a fair few systems badged as something else came out of the same factories. It is one of the reasons the gap in the field is smaller than the gap in the price lists.
It also means parts are less exotic than the unfamiliar name suggests, which is worth knowing before dismissing it.
What it costs, and why the brand is not the reason
This is the same table as everywhere else on this site, and that is deliberate. Across the brands we fit, the indoor unit is a minority of an installed price. Is Midea air conditioning any good?
Yes, with a caveat that is about refinement rather than reliability. Midea is the largest air conditioning manufacturer in the world and builds equipment for several brands sold in the UK under other names.
The best Daikin and Mitsubishi units are quieter at their lowest fan speed and have a deeper UK spare parts network in year ten. Everything else in a domestic installation is much closer than the price difference implies.
How much cheaper is Midea than Daikin?
Less than people expect, because the unit is the smaller part of an installed price. Both land in the 2,400 to 3,200 pound range for one room, with Midea nearer the bottom of it and Daikin nearer the top.
The useful way to spend the difference is more rooms rather than a smaller invoice.
Would you fit one in your own house?
In a spare bedroom or a home office, without hesitating. In the main bedroom of somebody who wakes easily, we would put the money into a quieter indoor unit and save it somewhere else.
That is the same advice we would give about any make. The room decides, not the badge.
